Vol 5. // In This Issue:
Clean living meets cannabis
Baked sale in a speakeasy
Giveaway: “The Weed Gummies Cookbook” by Monica Lo, @SousWeed
The spark behind Fruit + Flower Co. is the idea that if you’re the type of person who buys organic, gets produce from the farmer’s market, shops for groceries at stores like Whole Foods, purchases clean beauty products, and uses chemical-free cleaners in your home… then you should approach your weed in the same way.
“Clean” has a place in cannabis in the same way the organic movement changed the way we eat, and how “clean living” motivated us to use less pesticides and chemicals. This week L.A. Times cannabis reporter Adam Tschorn published “Clean weed is about to be everywhere in California,” which highlights a shifting trend in the industry to focus on better quality, clean products. Sephora was the first national beauty retailer to set clean standards for the CBD products it sells.
We are making conscious choices to use products with less chemicals. Shouldn’t that also apply to the edibles and cannabis you consume?
What is Clean Cannabis?
Cannabis and cannabis products that are produced without the use of any chemicals or pesticides, using only all natural ingredients, and grown in ways that are good for the earth.
Two years ago while at Papa & Barkley, we created a Declaration of Clean because consumers care more than ever before about what goes into their products, so they are making informed choices. I am proud to be a part of that campaign, and now that ethos extends here to Fruit + Flower Co.
This “Fruit + Flower Unfurled” Substack newsletter where I’ll share knowledge and information to inform choices you make about your cannabis products. Like I said, if you love really good food then you’re going to love really good weed. Let me show you how.
In next Sunday’s issue for paid subscribers, I’ll share a Guide to Clean Cannabis — what to look for and how to shop for better cannabis products at the dispensary.

A Baked Sale for Roger, the “Ganja Guru”
Last Sunday, I baked over 150 fudge brownies, pretzel caramel blondies, and peanut butter white chocolate cookies to host a Baked Sale for my friend Roger, the Ganja Guru.
Roger was unfairly racially profiled while traveling in Florida while wearing a beautiful cannabis outfit from luxury designer Potent Goods (the family who founded Juicy Couture). The Sheriff arrested him for having a small amount of cannabis on him. He is now facing charges and the baked sale was to help raise funds to pay for his legal defense.
It’s terrifying to think that someone’s freedom could be taken away because of a plant. And yet it happens every day.
The fundraiser event was held at THC Design’s Paramour Speakeasy in downtown Los Angeles. As we huddled together with love and support for a friend and member of our community, it felt like a true speakeasy that night.
“We’re still illegal in different states, no matter where we are, no matter whether we’re a medical patient, no matter what we’re doing. We can free the plant all we want but if we’re not there to support each other to make sure that WE’RE all free, then what are we doing?
— A powerful speech that evening from Timeka Drew, founder of Biko
Something that we know is good and legal here in California is not treated the same everywhere else. What’s incredible is how the community rallied together to help an individual. Isn’t that what supporting each other is all about? There is power in bake sales throughout American history. Even pot brownies have a significant place in our history.
Giveaway for Subscribers!
This month I’m giving away a copy of Monica Lo’s new book, “The Weed Gummies Cookbook.” Known as ‘SousWeed’ Monica is one of the first AAPI culinary cannabis chefs/creators/authors/recipe developers who blazed a path in this industry by stepping into her culture and heritage.
She’s best known for her sous vide method of infusing cannabutter and cannabis oil that preserves the most flavor, aromas and terpenes from the plant. I did an experiment making cannabutter with her sous vide method, stay tuned for more on that.
Monica Lo is an inspiration and someone I admire deeply. I am stoked as shit to partner with her to do this giveaway. If you’re not a winner-winner-chicken-dinner, you can pre-order her book on Amazon — arriving August 30.
Subscribers to this “Fruit+Flower Unfurled” newsletter will be automatically entered. No official entry necessary. Winner will be chosen by chickens and announced and notified by email on Sunday, August 28, 2022.
